We know Latvian-born New York Knicks rookie Kristaps Porzingis is familiar with American culture. He is a huge hip-hop fan. He grew up watching NBA basketball and idolizing Kobe Bryant. He even told Complex a few months back that his favorite movie of all-time is Friday. But nothing proves his loyalty to American black culture quite like this photo of a young Kristaps rocking cornrows.

The look is considerably more "thugged out while eating mom's post-game orange slices" than Allen Iverson, but it's fun to see that the talented 20-year-old power forward wasn't afraid to try something new.

The images come from a video in which Porzingis' first coach talks about him as a kid and his growth as a player. Full video below.

UPDATE: The girls loved it.

The reason Porzingis went with cornrows from around 10 to 13 years old: "I loved the look and the girls loved it."
