The second tier of Italian football wants to referees to recognise good sportsmanship, as well as bad.

Starting this weekend, Serie B will begin trialling the use of a 'green card' that will be shown to players who demonstrate exceptional behaviour on the football pitch.

Players can earn green cards for "conspicuous acts of sportsmanship or good virtue", which includes (but is not limited to) kicking the ball out of play when an opponent is injured, helping the referee make a correct call or even admitting to a dive.

Paolo Di Canio's famous act of sportsmanship would be green card material.

Receiving a green card will hold no direct impact on the result of a game but players who are awarded one will be recognised at the end of the season.
