New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith is recovering from surgery at the moment, one that was required after a former teammate punched him in the face over a matter of $600.

Current teammates were slow to defend Smith in the wake of the incident, and a couple of anonymous ones even went as far as to say that the violence inflicted upon him was indeed well-deserved

Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall is the first to publicly go on the record in stating that Smith wasn't to blame for the altercation.

From Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News:

“I was sitting right there and I would say this without going into too many details because we’ve already moved past it: Geno Smith did nothing wrong,” Marshall said on FOX TV Monday morning. “He did nothing wrong. … And that’s all I’m going to say about that because we have to move forward and I don’t want to be a distraction to our team, but Geno Smith did everything the right way.” ...

Marshall is a nine-year NFL veteran, so his words should carry weight in the locker room even though this is his first season in New York.

All it will take for Smith to earn the respect of more of his teammates will be for him to produce consistently once he's back in the lineup, but unfortunately, thanks to the need to heal from the injury, he won't be able to begin that process for at least another six weeks.
