Spike TV Is Honoring Floyd Mayweather With Their "The Best Ever" Award and…Wait, What?!

This announcement isn't going to go over well.

Floyd Mayweather is a hell of a boxer. The guy is 48-0 as a professional, so even if you don't like the way he goes about winning fights, it's impossible to argue against his greatness inside of the boxing ring.

But outside the ring? Well, that's another story. Mayweather has served jail time on domestic violence-related charges. He has been accused of domestic violence on a number of occasions. There have been entire feature stories devoted to just how terrible he truly is. And all indications are that he's not a good guy on a personal level.

Despite all of these things, Spike TV just announced that Mayweather is going to receive their "TBE (The Best Ever)" award at the Guys' Choice 2015 award show. The show is being taped on Saturday and will air on June 18. Here's an excerpt from a press release that Spike sent out today:

Spike TV announced today that Floyd Mayweather will be honored with the “TBE” (The Best Ever) award at the Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson hosted Guys Choice awards. The show has also added comedian, actress and activist Chelsea Handler and Academy Award®-nominated actress and cultural icon Salma Hayek to its star-studded lineup for “Guys Choice 2015.” Handler will be the first female ever to be awarded the coveted mantlers for the “Funniest M.F.” award.  Every guy’s mantasy Salma Hayek will receive the “Decade of Hotness” honor.

The first person to report on it was Fox Sports writer Jimmy Traina, who sent out this tweet:

Spike TV PR just sent an email that Floyd Mayweather will receiver "The Best Ever" award at the Guy's Choice Award.

And because of Mayweather's troubled past, Spike's decision hasn't received much support. Those who have seen Traina's tweet or heard about the Spike TV award have already started to sound off on the plan to give Mayweather the "TBE" award:

We'd expect the backlash to continue, too. With a few days remaining until the taping of the awards show, it's not too late for the folks at Spike TV to change their minds. We'll let you know if they end up doing it.
