England legend Paul Gascoigne has revealed that Arsene Wenger is to thank for helping him during his latest battle with alcohol.
The troubled ex-Spurs midfielder has revealed that Arsenal, his former North London rivals, paid £28,000 for pneumonia treatment and £22,000 for his hip replacement. The financial support was sanctioned personally by Arsene Wenger.
Speaking to The Sun, Gascoigne said:
"I rang up [Arsenal] physio Gary Lewin and told him I wasn't feeling great. He said to go to hospital as he feared it was pneumonia. Wenger then agreed to arrange £28,000 to pay for treatment. Arsenal also paid £22,000 when I had hip treatment."
Gascoigne was sectioned under the Mental Health Act in October 2014 and spent a week in hospital but told The Sun he's on the mend and will continue to improve as long as he doesn't "have a can" in his hand.
