According to a tweet from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, talented St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras and his girlfriend were killed in a car accident last night in the Dominican Republic:

Taveras was one of the top prospects in all of baseball, and is a guy we’ve had our eye on for quite a while. He hit .239 in 248 plate appearances with the Cardinals this season, and in the NLCS against the Giants had a game-tying, pinch-hit home run in the 7th inning of Game 2.

He was just 22 years old.
