On Friday, Nash Central High School staged a ceremony for Houshun Gaines, the school's star defensive end who had just been awarded a scholarship to play football at the University of Florida. In front of family and friends, Gaines announced his commitment to play for the Gators. The news was moving, inspiring, and—unfortunately—completely baffling for the University of Florida coaching staff.

You see, Florida never actually offered Gaines a scholarship. According to Nash Central's athletic director, Gaines was "catfished" by a person who was pretending to be Florida Gators assistant coach Brad Lawing on Twitter.

If there's a silver lining, it's that Gaines has offers from Miami, Duke, and others. So Gaines' ceremony might've just been a bit premature. For more on this story, check out the video above.
