The Denver Broncos are going to be starting the 2014-15 NFL season without one of their top receivers, Wes Welker. The long-time slot man, who has also been dealing with concussion issues this offseason, was suspended for four games today by the NFL after he was found to have been using amphetamines. As a result, Welker will be missing from the offense during key match-ups against the Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks, and Arizona Cardinals. His absence certainly won't make the team's season-opening slate any easier.
Welker accounted for 73 receptions and 10 TDs last season for the Broncos. Welker and former Bronco Eric Decker—who signed with the New York Jets over the offseason—were the team's second and third best receivers. Unfortunately, Peyton Manning won't see either receiver down the field in the first four games of the 2014-15 season.
Pro Football Talk reports that Welker's amphetamine suspension is related to the usage of MDMA during this year's Kentucky Derby. The report remains unconfirmed by either Welker or the NFL. Stay tuned for more developments.
