U.S. National Team Star Jermaine Jones Joining MLS

One of the World Cup stars of the U.S. men's national team is coming to play in MLS.

Another World Cup star of the U.S. Men’s National Team is coming back to the States, as Jermaine Jones has agreed to a contract with MLS and will join the New England Revolution.

After fellow stars Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley returned Stateside before the tournament, Jones hit free agency this summer following the World Cup after spending last season with Besiktas (Turkey) on loan from Schalke of the German Bundesliga.

The rules determining which team a “designated player” such as Jones joins within MLS are rather complicated, but basically what happened is New England and Chicago were the two teams with the salary space and a vacant designated player slot to use on him. MLS conducted a random draw between the two teams, and Jones was awarded to New England.
