Normally automakers go to the Nurburgring to set blistering laps in the hopes of toppling the timesheets. Toyota recently rounded the ‘Ring with a different purpose – to dominate the fuel economy record, which it did at a speed of – gasp – 40 miles per hour!

It’s not very white-knuckle but the record does stand. The Toyota Prius Plug-in TRD lapped the 12.9-mile circuit in 21 minutes, having used only five tablespoons of fuel. That equates to an astonishing 698mpg.
