If you’re a fan of the old Mazda RX-7 and RX-8, it’s time to start brimming with excitement. It appears that Mazda has indeed got plans for an upcoming rotary-engined vehicle, with a nod to the MX-5 chassis.

In an interview with Motoring, Mazda chairman Seita Kanai refused to comment on an upcoming Wankel-powered car, but would not rule out that proposition.

With a smile he responded to questioning, “Too much good question. I cannot answer."

Hidetoshi Kudo, Mazda’s corporate communications chief also said, “We have no intention of stopping development of the rotary engine. It’s part of our ‘challenging convention’ spirit.”

The current development of the Mazda 16X twin-rotor engine hints toward an upcoming road car, as well as the scalability of the next-gen MX-5 chassis, which would make a fitting architecture for a new-age RX7.
