Jack Groves, 79, had been hard at work restoring a vintage 1930 Ford Model A for local friends, the Waetjen family, but it appears all his hard work has been washed down the drain…or perhaps, the river.

That’s because a homeless man stole the Model A from outside a church on June 22, and proceeded to drive it straight into Oregon’s Crooked River. The 84-year-old car was recovered from the water and has been confirmed totaled.

But the strangest twist to the story is that Erik Halpin, the man who stole the vehicle, was reportedly released from jail due to overcrowding after being booked for DUII, car theft, and first-degree criminal mischief.
