The mystique of rallying brings with it an incredible history of iconic drivers and cars, however many times the sport is best known outside of motorsport for its tragic track record of spectator fatalities. Such is the case for this weekend’s Jim Clark Rally, held in the Scottish Borders.

Two separate accidents occurred during racing, which took the life of three spectators and left six injured. The first occurred on Saturday near Crosshall Farm during the Eccles stage, leaving five people injured, while the second and more serious crash occurred hours later near Coldstream.

Event organizers cancelled the rally after the second incident, which draws its name from Scottish Formula 1 driver Jim Clark. Clark tragically lost his life in a racing accident in Hockenheim, Germany, in 1968.
