Over the course of the last few weeks, a 22-year-old man named Carlos Rodriguez has allegedly stolen at least five cars from a Walmart parking lot in Port St. Lucie, Fla. But he won't be stealing any more cars anytime soon thanks to an alligator.

According to local police, Rodriguez was using "shaved keys" to access Honda and Acura cars parked in the lot and then driving off with them. However, he ran into trouble earlier this week when a police officer spotted him driving a Honda Civic in the area and attempted to pull him over. Rodriguez fled, but he didn't make it very far. Because a short time after he started running from the cops, an alligator crossed the road in front of him on a nearby street and caused Rodriguez to get into an accident. And police showed up on the scene a short time later and arrested him, charging him with five counts of grand theft auto. They also hit two of his accomplices with unrelated charges.

"It's pretty unimaginable that police officers would be at that point in time looking for these suspects," a police spokesman said, "and that an alligator unfortunately just happens to cross the road and assist us in catching these criminals."

You can say that again. Watch the video above to hear more about how the alligator helped police capture Rodriguez.
