One of the strangest things about electric vehicles is how damn quiet they are. While it takes some getting used, the silence is an even bigger problem for the blind. With that in mind, the European Union will require by 2019 that all electric vehicles emit sounds for blind pedestrians

Conversely, the EU will also require combustion engines to be 25 percent quieter. The beneficiaries of this law aren't as specific. "If the noise levels are above the recommended levels, exposed people are likely to experience negative effects on their health and well-being," a 2011 report called "Quiet Please" said. These two laws will bring rival EVs and combustion engines closer to equilibrium. In noise, at least.
