Earlier this year, Brooklyn Nets forward Jason Collins became the first openly gay player to take part in an NBA game, just a few months after coming out and admitting that he is gay. And now, a player in the college ranks has followed his lead. A short time ago, during an ESPN interview, UMass guard Derrick Gordon came out and revealed that he is gay, making him the first openly gay Division I men's college basketball player ever.

"I just didn't want to hide anymore, in any way," he told ESPN. "I didn't want to have to lie or sneak. I've been waiting and watching for the last few months, wondering when a Division I player would come out, and finally I just said, 'Why not me?'"

Gordon said that he was inspired by Collins' decision to come out. And he also said that he feels like a huge weight has been lifted off of his shoulders, especially since he has received so much support from the UMass team.

"Before, I just kept to myself because I didn't want to lie or be fake," he said. "But not anymore. I feel so good right now."

Good for him. Watch his full interview with ESPN below:
