When Daniel Ricciardo was disqualified from the Australian GP last weekend over fuel flow violations, it angered many Aussie fans. The FIA is still ruling over Red Bull’s appeal, but Australian fans might have another star to worry about – Ricciardo’s predecessor, Mark Webber.
The askew fuel sensor readings that stripped Red Bull from its podium can also be found in Porsche’s 2014 919 LMP1, which will be fielded by Mark Webber during the WEC this year. It appears that Porsche is skeptical about the fuel sensor accuracies and durability as well.
“We optimize how they are mounted to give them the easiest possible life, but right now we don’t know if it is all going to be robust,” said Alex Hitzinger, Porsche’s motorsport director.
During the Australian Grand Prix, the FIA noted that Ricciardo’s RB10 was consistently exceeding the 100kg/hour fuel flow limit. Members of the FIA warned Ricciardo’s mechanics and engineers about the issue, but the team believed the readings were false and ignored the issue. It will be interesting to see if Red Bull complies this coming weekend in Malaysia.
