American trucks embody the heart and soul of this country. It’s a formula that hasn’t changed much over the past 60 years. But following stricter emissions legislation and an increasingly eco-friendly buyer, the old heavyweights could use a zesty revision. Enter the 2015 Chevy Colorado, General Motors’ next-generation midsize pickup.

Chevy joins Ford in pioneering a new wave of weight saving materials for their 2015 utes. The Colorado has integrated lightweight steel into the chassis, body, and suspension, with aluminum finding its way into the hood, steering knuckles, and engine. GM estimates that these changes could account for a curb weight nearly 1,400 pounds less than a comparable full-size truck.

Don’t think that this weight saving will decrease capability, though. The Colorado will lead the midsize segment with an estimated 6,700 pounds of towing capacity. The new aluminum 2.5L four-cylinder and 3.6L V6 should be both powerful and efficient too, estimated at 190-horsepower and 302-horsepower, respectively. The EPA is expected to release emissions statements this spring, how economical could this lightweight be?
