Pete Rose Doesn't Like the Deal That Jay Z Got for Robinson Cano With the Mariners

And it has nothing to do with money.

There have been a lot of people out there (including us!) who have been very critical of the 10-year, $240 million deal that Jay Z got for Robinson Cano with the Mariners. From the negotiation process to the fact that Seattle seems to have overpaid for Cano by bidding against themselves (d'oh!), people have ripped the deal to shreds. But Pete Rose just spoke about it, and he came at it from a completely different angle.

Rather than ripping the deal itself, Rose wondered why in the world Jay Z negotiated a contract for Cano with the Mariners. He doesn't see Seattle doing big things in the future—and he thinks that Jay Z got his client a raw deal.

"He [Jay Z] got him a big raise," Rose said during an interview on ESPN New York 98.7 FM's The Michael Kay Show yesterday, "but he got him an extra 30-day vacation—and it's called October."

Rose may have a point. The Mariners, as currently constructed, are probably not a playoff team. But at the same time, Cano did just spend a playoff-less season with the Yankees, so does it really matter? Jay Z got Cano the best deal possible. And playoffs or not, he's going to get paid.
