Is Robinson Cano headed to…the Mets?

It doesn't seem very likely that the Mets would be interested in offering Cano a contract this offseason, given the fact that he is reportedly going to be commanding upwards of $300 million for his next contract. But according to the New York Post, Cano's agent Jay Z held a secret meeting with Mets COO Jeff Wilpon, general manager Sandy Alderson, and assistant general manager John Ricco last night in New York City to discuss the possibility of Cano signing with the Mets. Cano himself was not at the meeting. But the Post reports that it was Jay Z and Roc Nation Sports who initiated the meeting. This could mean that Jay Z is legitimately interested in Cano signing with the Mets this winter. Or it could simply mean that Jay Z wants to send a message to the Yankees and let them know that they are not the only team in New York that Cano would be willing to sign with.

Either way, it seems like the Mets should stay far, far, far away from Jay Z and Cano right now. Cano would add some star power to their lineup. But a $300 million contract is the last thing that the Mets need to add to their payroll right now.
