At the Tokyo Motor Show in November, Toyota will unveil the hydrogen fuel cell car that it will sell as a 2015 model, possibly starting in 2014. Little is known about the car at the moment, but Bloomberg is reporting that it will cost about as much as a Tesla Model S, which starts at $62,400, and should have a healthy range of around 300 miles.
We'll have to wait and see how the car drives, since expert opinions are very mixed as to how this will turn out. On one hand, International Council on Clean Transportation program director John German says of the car “this is a genuinely better vehicle" than a gasoline, diesel, or electric car, while Tesla Motors CEO says of hydrogen fuel cells in general “Fuel cells should be renamed ‘fool cells,’ they are so stupid. You could take best case of a fuel cell, theoretically the best case, and it does not compete with lithium-ion cells today. And lithium-ion cells are far from their optimum.”
Only time will tell.
