Now that the Dallas Mavericks 2012-13 NBA season is over, Mavs owner Mark Cuban can spend the next two months deciding whether or not he's serious about possibly drafting Brittney Griner in the second round of the 2013 NBA Draft. He better think looooooong and hard about it, though, because Griner's new WNBA coach Corey Gaines says that, if Cubes selects Griner, she's not going to be able to play in the NBA Summer League. And that would pretty much nullify her slim chances of making the Mavs roster.
"Summer League is messing with our games," Gaines, the head coach of the Phoenix Mercury, said recently. "I think [Griner playing in the NBA Summer League] won't happen. That wouldn't be a smart thing. If [Cuban] wants to talk about it, talk about it—it's better for us."
But, unless the WNBA or NBA Commissioner forces Gaines to allow Griner to try out for the Mavs, it doesn't sound like he's going to allow it to happen. Aw, shucks.
