Monday marks the 66th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball’s color barrier and integrating professional baseball, a hugely important moment for sports and equality in the United States as a whole. At that point in time, leagues failed to see the hypocrisy in considering themselves as the top competition. By preventing African-American and Latino-born players from participating, they were in effect watering down their talent pool and dramatically lessening the legitimacy of their top players. As a result, many of the records and statistical benchmarks that have been lionized through the years really should be reconsidered.
