George Barris bought the Batmobile—a custom painted 1955 Lincoln Futura concept—from the Ford Motor Company for just $1. Yesterday, the car sold at Barrett-Jackson Auction Company for $4,620,000.

Few cars capture the feeling of an era quite like Barris' Batmobile. It was the vehicle that inspired a generation of television viewers. The lucky buyer took home not only the car, but a tremendous selection of historical memorabilia and documentation from Barris' personal archive. The buyer also took home the true prize of the sale.

At $2,035,000, the second highest price car from the auction was a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing once owned by legendary actor Clark Gable. A gorgeous 1947 Talbot-Lago T-26 sold for the same price. Mustang lovers fought over a 1968 Shelby EXP 500, a legendary prototype car nicknamed the Green Hornet. Arguably the most desirable (and rarest) Shelby Mustang, the Ford sold for an impressive $1,980,000. Rounding out the highest price lots, a gorgeous 1934 Duesenberg J. Murphy ended at just under $1.5 million.
