It's a convenience feature in more ways than you would expect.
We all already know that keyless entry is pretty cool. You just put the key in your pocket and you can pretend that you car recognizes you and shuns all others... or you can just be normal and like to having to root around in your pockets.
VW, however, came up with another situation in which the feature might be useful.
