Here's the bad news for Chevrolet and General Motors: For each hybrid plug-in Volt sold, the company is potentially losing up to $49,000. This is based on the estimate that each car costs about $75,000-$85,000 to produce between tooling, development, parts, manual labor, and materials. Here's the good news: The Volt's attractive lease rates and exterior looks are steadily stealing away Toyota's Prius customers. According the Reuters, the No. 1 non-GM vehicle traded in for the Volt is the Prius. So, despite the initial shock of the costs, the recent upward sales trend and the value of taking the competitors customers look like positive signs for Chevy.
