Donovan McNabb won't be eligible to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame for at least another five years. If he doesn't get picked up by a team this season, his five-year waiting period will begin. And yet, McNabb is already campaigning hard for a yellow jacket.

"Absolutely," he said yesterday when asked about whether he feels like he deserves Hall of Fame consideration. "See, one thing that people don't realize—I never played the game to make it to the Hall of Fame. I played the game because I love it. I played the game to win. I'm a competitor. When I step out on that field, I feel like I'm the best player on the field. Even these last two years, when people may look at it and they'll say, 'Oh, he's done, or whatever.' I'm 34, 35 years old but still, I played at the pinnacle, I played at the highest level of my career. I played there. And I would vote for myself for the Hall of Fame…My numbers are better than Jim Kelly, better than Troy Aikman, better than a lot of guys who are in the Hall of Fame. But the one thing they do have is a Super Bowl."

Er, well, Aikman does. Kelly, however, doesn't. Which might work in McNabb's favor. What won't help him, though, is sticking around for another year as a backup QB and further tarnishing his legacy. Get out and get out now, Donovan. And then we'll see about all of this Hall of Fame talk in five years.
