The counterfeit sneaker business is more prevalent than ever, but thousands of fakes were recently taken off the streets thanks to the South African Revenue Service.
The Citizen says that SARS stopped a truck at the Lebombo border post in Mpumalanga yesterday and discovered roughly 30,000 pairs of counterfeit sneakers. According to the report, two men were driving the truck from Mozambique into South Africa before being stopped for a routine customs inspection.
The search soon uncovered thousands of fake shoes, with the break down by brand as follows: a whopping 20,164 pairs of adidas, 5,077 Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars, 3,627 Nikes, 389 Air Jordans, 39 Vans, and eight pairs of Pumas.
In total, the fake goods were found to be worth over 23 million in South African Rand, converting to around $1,400,000 USD. In the big picture, this is a small hit to the thriving fake sneaker industry, but hopefully this is enough to help at least a few 'heads from getting burnt with fugazis. Stay woke out there.
