Kanye West just ruined everyone who works in the media's New Year's Eve by releasing his new song, "Facts," tonight, especially those who concentrate on sneakers. The song, which boasts a chorus that says, "Yeezy, Yeezy, Yeezy, just jumped over Jumpman," is one big canon-sized shot at Nike.
It's no secret that West, who left Nike to go to adidas, isn't a fan of the brand represented by a Swoosh. In the song he raps about the popularity of his Yeezy Boost sneakers, saying, "I feel so accomplished. I just talked a lot of shit but I just done did the numbers. Herzog and adidas man you know they love it."
West goes further on to say that the only thing saving Nike right now is the brand's collaborations with Drake and Don C. He raps, "If Nike ain't had Drizzy man they would have nothing. If Nike ain't have Don C they would have nothing."
The rest of the song touches on Air Jordans not selling out and adidas signing big name players to its Basketball lineup. He even says that LeBron James, who recently inked a lifetime deal with Nike, would have left the brand, too, saying, "Yeezy, Yeezy, Yeezy, they line up for days. Nike out here bad they can't give shit away. I ain't drop an album but the shoes went platinum. Nike, Nike treat employees just like slaves. Gave LeBron a billy not to run away. Tell adidas that we need a million in production. I done told y'all all I needed was the infrastructure. Now we the hottest in the streets there ain't no discussion. James Harden, Swaggy P running up the budget."
Some of West's criticism are fair and will certainly galvanize the pro-adidas fans. Others leave industry insiders scratching their heads, as Nike is still the biggest footwear and sportswear brand in the world.
