UPDATE (7/4/15, 4:30 p.m. EST):
Ahead of the August 5 date announced last week, The Verge ventured to Spain to test out the Lexus hoverboard and returned with some devastating news. It's a real, working thing, but it requires a ton of money, practice, and patience to operate properly and won't be released to the public. The "hoverboard" was created exclusively for Lexus' "Amazing In Motion" commercial series.
We know, our childhood dreams are crushed too, but truthfully, it did seem like there was something Lexus wasn't telling us in last week's teaser. However, The Verge does mention that Hendo has been making strides to develop a true levitation device. At this point, we'll believe it when we see it.

Last month, Lexus answered the wishes of, well, everyone with the announcement of a real-life hoverboard. The teaser managed to pique the interest of gadget geeks, sneakerheads, and Back to the Future fans alike, but it was also met with a fair amount of skepticism, and understandably so. Now, the luxury vehicle company is preparing to silence those naysayers with an official unveiling.
In the teaser below, Lexus says its hoverboard will arrive on August 5. It's not quite clear if it will actually be available for purchase, but we'll surely learn more in the coming days. According to the brand, the hoverboard "represents true engineering innovation and can be seen in action soon."
For sneakerheads, the biggest surprise — or disappointment, depending on your perspective — is that the world will get a genuine, working hoverboard before it gets power-lacing Nike Mags. Those are heavily rumored to be releasing before the end of the year, but at this point, it looks like Lexus is beating Nike in the race to the future.
