While most of Nike's designs and technologies are universally palatable, the Swoosh does create pieces that only a few people can wrap their heads around. This time around, Nike is taking it even further with its recently announced Free Rift Sandal.

Taking the already left-of-center design that is the Nike Air Rift as its base, the Free Rift Sandal takes the Rift's minimal components and gets rid of them, stripping the sneaker down even further. Gone are the Velcro straps and most of the neoprene body. In their place is nothing as the Free Rift Sandal leaves much of the foot exposed through several large cut-outs in the upper. It is a sandal after all. Keeping a piece of the original in tact, the Free Rift Sandal does use the Rift's split-toe design.

If you are one of the brave heads that can manage to rock the Free Rift Sandal, you'll be able to cop the new design on May 7 at NikeLab retailers, with a larger release for North America on May 28.
