In 1987, Nike first released the Air Max 1, designed by Tinker Hatfield. Hatfield had reinvented an existing technology to create a concept that would continue for the next 27 years; he took the Nike Air technology already in use, and he made it visible. The first Air Max was born, and the world of sneakers was changed forever, as the Air Max family was born and consequently expanded to include some of Nike's most popular silhouettes, and grew beyond its running roots, sparking the growth of a phenomenon in the sneaker world.
Spring 2015 sees the Air Max family gain a new member, in the form of the Air Max 1 Ultra Moire, an update to the classic Air Max 1. The new sneaker has a completely new outsole, which uses a lot less material in comparison to the original, consequently lowering the weight and increasing the flexibility of the sneakers. On top of the outsole sits a synthetic suede, laser-perforated, one-piece upper inspired by the Nike Air Zoom Moire + from 2006, the first Nike+ enabled shoe. The Nike Air Max 1 Ultra Moire will be the first of Nike's freshly-minted "Sneaker of the Week" program, which highlights one selected Nike Sportswear sneaker a week.
