A Recent History of Cinco de Mayo Themed Sneakers

During the spring of 2005, Nike recruited Mexican American artist Mister Cartoon to introduce the Cinco de Mayo Air Force 1.The popular Los Angeles tattooist decked out the custom-friendly AF1 with a patent leather upper and various designs. Mr. Cartoon's added a signature "LA" emblem on the heel tab to complete the make-up of the shoe.

Nike Skateboarding offered its homage to the proud Mexican holiday by introducing the Nike SB Dunk Low - Pro "Cinco de Mayo." The low top silhouette featured a green, red, and white leather upper that resembled the Mexican flag perfectly. Brown also served as the outsole and inner sock lining color.

In honor of the Forum Low's 25th Anniversary and Cinco de Mayo, adidas decked out the popular sneaker in a flamboyant colorway. This ode to the Mexican holiday went against the norm and didn't (exactly) feature the colorways nation's flag, but still subtley celebrated the holiday.

Being that Paul Rodriguez is a Mexican American, it was no surprise that his signature Nike Zoom Air P-Rod Elite was got a Cinco de Mayo treatment. Designed by Marco Hernandez, the sneaker featured the standard Mexican flag-themed color palette while detailed artwork ran throughout the side panels of the kicks. "Smile Now. Cry Later" was featured on the tongues of the shoes while a bold Zoom Air provided great cushioning.

One of the most popular Cinco de Mayo colorways of the P-Rod line released in 2008 and was dubbed "Mexico." The shoe was built in a white leather upper that featured the signature P-Rod diamond pattern throughout the midsole and inner sock lining. Hues of mint was included to add a really fresh element to the sneaker. The standard green, white and red played its role beautifully as they were utilized as accent colors. A mesh tongue with Rodriguez's signature completed this exclusive skateboarding shoe.

The versatile Nike Vandal Low Premium found itself rocking a new colorway during the 2008 holidays. With Cinco de Mayo looming, Nike introduced a bold edition of one of its most popular low top models. To add flare to the sneaker, Nike laced the Vandel Low with laser details and a translucent sole that hosted a green pattern.

Jordan Brand is no stranger to taking part in holiday-themed sneakers. This time around they double dipped with a contrasting black and white Air Jordan 1 pack. To further honor Cinco de Mayo, The Air Jordan 1 pack released with matching t-shirts that highlighted a iconic red, white and green "Wings" logo.

Saucony made sure they were not left out of the holiday festivites when Cinco de Mayo rolled around in 2010. The running company chose the Jazzy Low Pro to recieve the makeover. Green, white, and red served as the primary colors, while hints of gold added the finishing touches.

Supra joined in on the holiday festivities with the introduction of the Skytop II "Cinco de Drinko." The popular high top model was built with premium white full grain leather. To show its appreciation for Cinco de Mayo, the sneaker garnered it inspiration from Mexican blankets and Zarapes. The "Cinco de Drinko" Skytop was a very limited release at retailers like Factory 413.

Paul Rodriguez stayed true to his ways and introduced yet another Cinco de Mayo inspired colorway in 2010. This time around Rodriguez and Nike laced the Nike SB Zoom Air P-Rod III in a green suede that embodied the holiday perfectly. Hints of red added personality to the shoe while a bold white Swoosh ran throughout the side panel.

Adidas partnered with Mexican brand Listen Recovery to bring a commemorative Cinco De Mayo inspired EncoreAdi that featured multiple colors and textures. The shoe released in limited quantities alongside a wind-breaker, long sleeve shirt and basketball shorts courtesy of Listen Recovery.

The Nike SB P-Rod line became a regular for receiving color makeups for the holiday. The innovative skateboarding shoe stayed away from the bold approach and displayed a more casual look with green, white, and red serving as the accent colors while a clean swan upper played the primary base. The silhouette added a Black swoosh and white midsole.
