College isn’t just about classwork and clubs—it’s about culture. It’s about learning to live with, and ideally, come to understand, all sorts of new groups of people that you may not have encountered as much back in high school. College is basically one epic social experiment, where the two main goals are enlightenment and survival.
The new Netflix original series Dear White People provides a unique glimpse of life at an Ivy League college where students who are black, white, and every other color are caught in a very unusual melting pot. While the show most definitely serves as a satire on race relations in post-racial America, particularly amongst the allegedly more progressive younger generations, at its heart it’s tackling even bigger themes, like acceptance, identity, and finding your way in the world.
Created by Justin Simien, who wrote and directed the 2014 feature film of the same name, Dear White People features episodes helmed by a cavalcade of amazing directors, including Simien, Charlie McDowell (Netflix’s The Discovery) and Barry Jenkins (Best Picture Oscar winner, Moonlight).
