White knuckle action? Check. Slick one-liners? Double check. Baby Groot? All the checks, ever. That’s right folks. Marvel just dropped the first real trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and it’s jam packed with all the elements that made the first installment such a surprise juggernaut hit.
Though little in terms of plot is revealed—there’s an atomic bomb, nifty spaceships, and one seriously heinous monster—when a trailer is this good, it really doesn’t matter. Set to Sweet’s seventies banger “Fox On The Run,” the clip is a glorious two-minute reminder of why the motley crew of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon, and Baby Groot (R.I.P Groot) might just be the most exciting heroes in the entire MCU.
Director James Gunn looks to have recaptured the same goofy energy and irreverent spirit that made the original feel like such a welcome departure for the super hero factory. And, if the closing gag is any indication (no spoilers here) the flame that flickered between Star-Lord and Gamora in the original, will be burning brighter than ever the sequel.
Some of the previously revealed details, like the return of Michael Rooker‘s Yondu, Kurt Russell’s addition to the cast as Ego the living planet, and a top secret cameo by none other than Sylvester Stallone, don’t get any play here, but that’s all the more reason to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 again and again, when it hits theaters on May 5, 2017. Watch the trailer above.
