Peter Vaughan, most known stateside for his role as Maester Aemon in HBO's Game of Thrones, has died at the age of 93. In a statement to BBC News on Tuesday morning, Vaughan's agent Sally Long-Innes confirmed his passing. "This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan passed away at approximately 10:30 this morning," Long-Innes said. "He died peacefully with his family around him."
Vaughan was also celebrated for supporting roles in the British sitcoms Porridge and Citizen Smith, in addition to his memorable performance in the Oscar-nominated 1993 Merchant-Ivory film The Remains of the Day. His performance as Maester Aemon on Game of Thrones spanned from 2011 to 2015.
Vaughan considered himself a character actor, once joking to BBC that he "did not have the looks" for romantic leads. "If you're a character actor, you don't need to wait for the next leading role," Vaughan once said. "But if you are a leading man you have to wait for the next part. Sometimes that means long periods without work."
