HBO, not satisfied with having two of the hottest new shows on TV right now, wants to keep the super fun sadism of Game of Thrones going for as long as possible. The only thing currently standing in the way of all that is the fact that Thrones is wrapping up for good after season 8, meaning HBO really needs George R.R. Martin to step up with some ideas soon immediately.
"I would say it's still kind of preliminary ongoing talks," Casey Bloys, a super important dude at HBO, toldEntertainment Weekly while discussing the renewals of Westworld and Insecure. "There are areas we are exploring, but I wouldn't point to any one and say, 'This is what we're going to do.'" According to EW, HBO is "still talking" with Martin about putting together a possible prequel or spin-off series.
Bloys previously spoke about keeping the Thrones train moving into the next decade with the Hollywood Reporter in September. At the time, Bloys explained that the tense shooting schedule for the OG Thrones meant that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would likely not be able to immediately leap into a new series.
"They're gone for months at a time," Bloys explained. "So it's a big, big thing. But should we find a property that makes sense as a spin-off or a prequel—whatever you want to say—I would not expect them to do it, because they're going to need to decompress for a good amount of time, but it would certainly be nice to have their involvement in some way."
Whatever. Sounds fine to me. When's Curb season 9 starting up?
