Deadpool has finally found what it’s looking for: Francis a director and it’s not Quentin Tarantino. Deadpool has signed on John Wick co-director David Leitch after losing Deadpool director Tim Miller, reportedThe Wrap.
Leitch made his directorial debut with 2014’s Keanu Reeves-led action thriller John Wick. Leitch dropped out of the John Wick sequel, premiering in February 2017, to work on another film. A third installment of John Wick is already planned.
Deadpool’s latest hire comes at a crucial time, considering Deadpool 2 was rumored to start production in January 2017 despite its lack of a director; major players other than Ryan Reynolds, who will stay on as the Merc With a Mouth; and a composer. Deadpool’s composer jumped ship in a show of solidarity for Miller, who reportedly left the sequel over “irreconcilable differences” creative differences with Captain Deadpool himself, Reynolds.
In an interview with GQ released this week, Reynolds called Miller “brilliant” and added he was “sad” to see the director off the sequel. Reynolds also talked about his involvement with making Deadpool and its sequel (which he will produce): “...there are character and tone things that I know really well. And I've also been with this thing the longest out of anybody, aside from the guys that wrote the comics. Eleven years I've been trying to get this Sisyphus rock up the hill, and it kept rolling back on top of me. So I'm gonna be all the fuck over it from the moment it starts to the moment it finishes."
Deadpool currently holds the record for highest grossing R-rated movie ever after raking in over $745 million worldwide.
