Need a comforting sign that not everything in this world is absolute shit? Here's one: Knight Rider, the classic 1980s TV series starring the one and only David Hasselhoff, is coming back again. Despite the less-than-enthusiastic response to NBC's 2008 attempt at a sequel series, Deadline reported Tuesday that the network is teaming with Machinima and producer Justin Lin for a full-on reboot with a digital twist.

"Knight Rider is an iconic franchise whose concepts of AI and autonomous vehicles were science fiction in the 1980s and are now science fact," Chad Gutstein, CEO of digital network Machinima, said in a press release. "Justin is one of the leading storytellers of his generation and we couldn't be more excited to work with him on re-invigorating Knight Rider for a new generation of fans." The series is expected to launch as soon as next year.

Lin has endured his share of car-centered cinema before, having previously helmed multiple entries in the Fast and Furious franchise. Lin, who also directed this year's Star Trek Beyond, is simultaneously developing a Hot Wheels feature film with Legendary Pictures. The Mattel toy car line has been jonesing for a movie adaptation since at least 2013, at which point Deadlinehad Simon Crane rumored as a director.

In addition to the classic David Hasselhoff series that ran from 1982 to 1986, the Knight Rider universe also includes multiple made-for-TV movies and the short-lived spin-off Team Knight Rider. Can we expect some boundary-pushing TV-MA vibes with Lin and Machinima's Knight Rider? Hopefully so. A talking car that spews profanity sounds pretty fucking cool.
