ABC Orders Rapping Mayor Comedy From 'Hamilton' Star and 'Fallon' Writer

ABC is stoked on this potential comedy series about a struggling rapper who accidentally becomes mayor.

ABC seems pretty stoked about a possible comedy series centered on a "struggling hip-hop artist" who runs for public office to promote a mixtape, only to incidentally win. The network has gifted the untitled single-camera project with a cast-contingent pilot commitment, Deadlinereported Tuesday.

Daveed Diggs, who bagged a Grammy and a Tony for his performance in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton this year, has also signed on as executive producer. Diggs, though also known for his work in the experimental group clipping., is not expected to star.

The pilot is currently set to be helmed by ABC alum James Griffiths. Griffiths previously directed three episodes of the network's Black-ish, on which Diggs has popped in for a few episodes as the brother of Rainbow Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross). Diggs wrapped his Hamilton duties as both Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette in July and will next be seen in Stephen Chbosky's forthcoming drama Wonder alongside Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, and recent Room standout Jacob Tremblay.
