Comedy writer Billy Domineau has written for Saturday Night Live and The Onion, but his new venture may be his biggest yet. Domineau wrote a spec script for Seinfeld called "The Twin Towers" that is set in the days following 9/11. The script follows familiar Seinfeld format—each of the characters are caught in their own comic situation related to the terrible tragedy, with all of them coming together at the end.
While the idea sounds (and, honestly, is) in bad taste, the script is also well-written and funny. Slate called it "an idea...so terrible it’s actually brilliant," which is a dead-on assessment. Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer (and Newman!) each find a way to make America's biggest tragedy all about them, to hilarious and horrifying results.
The script was first spotted by the website The Comic's Comic, which noted that it had quickly become "the talk of comedians, writers and actors." Domineau told the site how the whole thing happened.
"I was helping someone write a sketch a few months back and told them theirs needed to be an exercise in bad taste, 'Like imagine if there was a 9/11 episode of Seinfeld...wait a minute,'" he said.
Reactions on social media were both positive and a little horrified.
