Last year’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain seemed to form a perfect end point to the Metal Gear saga. And not just the in-game story — it also saw series creator Hideo Kojima leave Konami after nearly 30 years there, in less than pleasant circumstances. That looked like it could be the last chapter for Solid Snake and co, but Konami are pushing ahead with a new game in the series.

At Gamescom this week they have announced Metal Gear Survive. It’s not a full instalment in the series, instead being a four player, stealth co-op game — and it looks very different to the traditional Metal Gear gameplay. It looks like it’ll be a four player game a bit like Left 4 Dead or something, with you not playing as Solid Snake, and possibly your own avatar instead. There are also zombies. The trailer does open with Snake and Big Boss though, and Konami claim it with tie into the MSGV “experience”. This is mostly all just speculation at this point though.

Fans aren’t happy that the series is continuing without Kojima.

Hideo Kojima is one of gaming’s true auteurs, an original, unique voice that stands out in a world of increasingly identical AAA titles. Metal Gear was his baby, and even when it was weird AF, it was always interesting and enjoyable. There have been plenty of other Metal Gear spin-offs, including 2013’s Metal Gear Revengerance and several portable games. But even though Survive does look pretty good, it just feels like a standard online co-op game — not the unique experience experience Metal Gear and Kojima usually offer.

Metal Gear Survive will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC via Steam in 2017.
