John Oliver on Democratic National Convention: At Least No One "Exhaled a Swarm of Locusts"

John Oliver compared the Democratic and Republican conventions, one of which included a swarm of locusts. Any guesses?

This week should bring some welcomed respite from the general mania surrounding both the Republican and Democratic conventions, though an ill-advised tweet or passive aggressive murmur from the GOP nominee could shift the entire national discussion once again. In fact, as John Oliver explained on Sunday's Last Week Tonight, this "self-serving half-man" has already done exactly that.

"The main takeaway from these two weeks is that, incredibly, we may be on the brink of electing such a damaged sociopathic narcissist, that the simple presidential duty of comforting the families of fallen soldiers may actually be beyond his capabilities," Oliver told his audience, referencing Trump's criticism of Khizr and Ghazala Khan, who appeared at the DNC last week to honor their son who was killed in Iraq in 2004. "I genuinely did not think that was a part of the job that someone could be bad at."

Elsewhere, Oliver kept it 100 about Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's DNC acceptance speech. According to Oliver, Clinton's speech was obviously better in that it didn't even vaguely resemble the convention rhetoric of Trump, who simply "opened his mouth and exhaled a swarm of locusts."

But Oliver also had some apt one-liners in the bag for Democratic VP pick Tim Kaine, summarized by the Last Week Tonight host as a "human sweater vest," and current VP Joe Biden. Biden's speech set Twitter ablaze with his apparent decision to go off script and thus go full Biden, though Oliver is clearly way more excited about his post-White House plans as potentially "the most inspiring SoulCycle instructor ever."
