If you’ve been on the internet at all this week — or even this year — you’ve seen the Arthur memes that have been blowing up. Memes like this:
It’s a strange one — the Canadian-American show was kind of just ever-present during the 90s, and had a strong educational bent, which makes it the perfect nostalgia bomb for millennial, especially when you put it in a modern context. It’s definitely going to cause a surge of interest in the show. More Arthur merchandise has probably been sold this week than in the last few years combined, and if it keeps up we’re pretty sure some sort of reboot or reunion special will be announced pretty soon.
So you’d think the people behind the show would be happy to see the show get a second life, right? Nah. The show was meant to be moral and education, remember, and not a vehicle to express your feelings about waiting for the new Frank Ocean album to drop. Boston’s WGBH public TV station, who co-created the show, have released a statement, and they aren’t happy. While they appreciate the memes “have been created and shared in good fun”, they are “disappointed by the few that are outside of good taste.” Which is basically all of them.
“Our hope is that Arthur and his friends will be depicted in a way that is respectful and appropriate for all audiences,” WGBH spokeswoman Ellen London continues, “including young Arthur fans and their families.” So basically stop tweeting about Buster’s thirst for DW, you hear?
