Spy satire ‘Archer’ is one funniest adult cartoons out there. And if you don’t know, you need to get on Netflix right now and find out. The show just finished out its seventh season, and while there’s no official line about it ending, it’s not been renewed as of yet. But there has been talk of a film version.
Executive producers Matt Thompson and Casey Willis were interviewed by The Daily Beast, and Thompson said:
It’s all up to whatever [creator] Adam Reed wants to do, but he and I have definitely talked about it. I think we talk about it once every two years. We vacillate between if you do it, why are you doing the TV show? And should it be live-action, or should it be cartoon? The talk is there, we just still haven’t decided. I don’t think there will be a movie before the last episode of Archer airs on TV. I don’t think we’ll make a movie before the series finishes.
But how would a live-action movie work? Would the actors just play the characters they voice? Aisha Taylor would make a convincing real-life Lana Kane for instance.But the voice of Sterling Archer, the great comedian H Jon Benjamin doesn’t really resemble the superspy:
Matt Thompson had an answer for who he’d like to see take his place:
It’s Jon Hamm. If Archer goes live-action, I do believe it will be Jon Hamm. Maybe you could do it with Jon Benjamin’s voice coming out of him? I don’t know. Adam is always like, ‘I don’t know if I want the movie to be live-action because I want it to be Jon Benjamin!’ But if it is live-action—and if it is not Jon Benjamin—it is our greatest hope that it would be Jon Hamm. I can say that with confidence.
That’s pretty great cast. Sterling Archer and Don Draper are pretty much the same character — they’re both womanising, drunk, self-centred 60s throwbacks, it’s just one is a spy and the other happens to work in advertising. File this under “Would definitely watch.”
