Though it's pretty damn hard to tell, the five people staring back at you in the photo above are the new Power Rangers. After shaking up the Power Rangers universe with an early glimpse of Elizabeth Banks as the villainous Rita Repulsa in April,  Entertainment Weekly just unveiled the first look at the rebooted crew's new digs and, um, people are definitely reacting.

This fresh take on the Rangers' attire ditches the spandex of the '90s in favor of something far more extraterrestrial. The verdict? Maybe too much Iron Man, not enough camp:

I can't stand Power Rangers anyway, but the reboot costumes look like odd cosplay to me as opposed to multi million dollar movie designs.

Here's what you need for a good #PowerRangers costume design:

IT NEEDS TO BE SIMPLE AND ICONIC. NOT THIS. pic.twitter.com/qktQd3gOyj

The new Power Rangers costumes look like Iron Man, the Robocop remake and Nolan's Batman in a blender.

I hope the new power ranger costumes are test costume to see how the public reacts and the real ones will be CGI. #PowerRangers

Others, including the ominously masked individual below, optimistically theorized that maybe the reboot was simply testing the waters with this teaser image before unveiling the real deal:

Compelling theory, but highly unlikely. So what's the story behind this bold makeover? According to director Dean Israelite, the changes are all about capturing the youthful energy of the original crew, with a modern twist.

"The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis," Israelite toldEW on Thursday. "These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit."

Becky G (Yellow Ranger), Ludi Lin (Black Ranger), Dacre Montgomery (Red Ranger), Naomi Scott (Pink Ranger), and RJ Cyler (Blue Ranger) bring their Power Rangers update to theaters Mar. 24, 2017. Pray for spandex.
