'The Leftovers' Is Finally Heading to Australia for Its Last Season

More than being one of the best shows of 2015The Leftovers is one of the best shows on television right now. But no one's watching. Many viewers departed after the HBO series' first season depriving themselves of a spectacular season two. The show's low ratings seemed to put it at risk for cancellation before some devout followers protested for a season three renewal leading HBO to come around. Today The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reportsThe Leftovers is headed to Australia for its third and final season.

For everyone sleeping on The Leftovers, which people will look back on years from now questioning why they didn't watch it sooner, the show explores what happens when two percent of the world's population disappears for reasons no one knows nor seems to understand and how people react in the wake of that loss. Yes, that's bleak, but you'll be rewarded with so much else if you watch it.

The Leftovers moved from its New York location, shedding some of its cast along the way, when it moved to Texas for season two. Now THRreports sources are saying The Leftovers will make an even bigger move for its final season by moving to Australia. THRreports the season will not only take place in Australia, but that it will also be shot there, although the show will first revisit Texas before that happens.

This is hugely satisfying for Leftovers fans who've been keeping up with all of the references to Australia in the show's second season.

Those references include:

  • The man in the tower at Miracle asks Michael Murphy to mail a letter for him. The letter is addressed to a David Burton in Australia.
  • Kevin's dad being in Australia.
  • A newspaper with the headline: "Biblical Rains in Sydney."
  • A news broadcast that talks about a man presumed to be dead who emerges alive from a cave in Australia. That man is identified as David Burton.

After The Leftovers season three renewal show co-creator Damon Lindelof said: 

"Tom, myself and our incredible team of writers and producers put tremendous care into designing those seasons as novels unto themselves…with beginnings, middles and ends. As we finished our most recent season, it became clear to us that the series as a whole was following the same model…and with our beginning and middle complete, the most exciting thing for us as storytellers would be to bring THE LEFTOVERS to a definitive end. And by 'definitive,' we mean 'wildly ambiguous but hopefully mega-emotional,' as all things related to this show are destined to be."

Fans will have to wait patiently for Lindelof and co. to return since a premiere date for season three hasn't been announced.
