Melissa McCarthy's new comedy The Boss, you know, the one with the girl scout in the trailer saying "buy my cookies or I'll f---ing kill you," has toppled Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice from the No. 1 spot at the box office this week after DC's blockbuster superhero movie only spent two weeks there.
The Boss opened with a $23.5 million debut, according toThe Wrap, good enough to barely beat out Batman v Superman's third-week haul of $23.4 million. And just to be clear, neither one of these movies got good reviews from the critics. The Boss is sitting at 18 percent on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing, while Batman v Superman has gotten more attention for its horrible reviews and head-scratch-inducing plot than for anything else (certified rotten at 29 percent).
What should also be clear is that Batman v Superman is still a massive hit. The film has brought in $296.7 million domestically so far, but it's falling off way faster than most big-budget superhero blockbusters normally do. After a giant opening weekend haul (biggest in history), the movie plummeted 68 percent in its second week, maybe because people who go to see those kinds of movies on opening weekend are going no matter what, while people who go later actually care about reviews. There have been second-week drops like that before, but only when there has been other blockbuster competition (read: there was no real competition last week). This week's drop is a 54 percent decline from the last.
Rounding out the top five this week are Zootopia at No. 3 (the best reviewed movie at the box office right now with a 98 percent fresh rating), followed by My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, followed by the certified rottenHardcore Henry.
