Well, that didn't take too long, but probably longer than it should have. Two months after we asked the all important question, "why wasn't Melissa McCarthy invited to come back to Gilmore Girls," Melissa McCarthy has apparently been invited to come back to Gilmore Girls.
McCarthy appeared in all seven seasons of Gilmore Girls' original run on The WB, playing Lorelai's best friend and inn co-owner Sookie St. James (great name), so it seemed crazy to leave her out, especially since she went on to become probably the most famous member of the entire cast. People wondered if it was money, or maybe because she's too busy working on upcoming blockbusters.
Actually, it was because nobody had asked her.
Today, though, everything is right in the world of defunct network dramedies from the aughts that are coming back via Netflix's magical TV revival powers, because TVLine is reporting that McCarthy will join the rest of the cast when they come back to Stars Hollow. Here she is announcing it on a pre-taped segment of Friday's Ellen.
Earlier this week, series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino toldEW that she knew McCarthy's schedule was "f---ing busy," but she was down to figure out a way to work her in.
“We’ve just put it out into the universe; we’re here until May 10,” she told them. “I know what the scene is. I’ll pre-light it for her. She can drive up, run in, shoot it, and run out. I can get her in and out in two hours.”
Gilmore Girls is getting four, 90-minute long episodes on Netflix. No premiere date has been set yet.
