The fantastic Jessica Jones was fearless in its first season getting gritty and dark, things not normally associated with the Marvel universe. If you'd like to see more of that, especially after binging season two of Daredevil led by a tremendous Jon Bernthal performance as the Punisher, then Luke Cage is the series for you. Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker says the series will be "The Wire of Marvel television."
Coker, who is also Luke Cage's executive producer, made the promising comparison at Tuesday's Captain America: Civil War premiere. He toldEntertainment Weekly the series is "forward-thinking" and has a "'90s hip-hop vibe"—the hip-hop vibe established in the teaser trailer for the series featuring Nas' "Made You Look."
"It's very sophisticated. I mean, it's got a '90s hip-hop vibe, but it's really forward-thinking. We have Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad doing the scoring for us," Coker said. "We have a lot of different musical appearances, but at the same time, we've got the Marvel action. We've got drama. I would like this to be, I mean, I know this is heavy but, The Wire of Marvel television, because we really deal with a lot of different issues."
For those unfamiliar, here's a summarization of The Wire, the HBO show that ran from 2002-2008 and that some would argue is better than Breaking Bad.
Coker said those issues will reportedly be seen playing out in New York's Harlem versus Hell's Kitchen which audiences have come to know in Daredevil and Jessica Jones.
Besides continuing to build towards the eventual The Defenders series Luke Cage will be tasked with introducing Misty Knight and possibly Iron Fist, who will be played by Game of Thrones' Finn Jones.
"We were trying not to be on the nose. We're going to give all the fans all the things they want," said Colter, also at the Civil War premiere, about Luke Cage.
Luke Cage premieres September 30.
